The Secret to Reaching Big Goals? Building Small Habits, Every Day.
There are two quotes from 101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think by Brianna Wiest that I love and want to share as the starting point for this week's newsletter.
“Accomplishing goals is not success. How much you expand in the process is.”
“(...) routine is important because habitualness creates mood, and mood creates the ‘nurture’ aspect of your personality, not to mention that letting yourself be jerked around by impulsiveness is a breeding ground for everything you essentially do not want.”
This week, we're diving into habits and their impact on your life as a whole. Most people fixate on their goals without realizing that to become someone you’re not yet, you need to first work on who you are now.
If you were the person capable of achieving your goals, you'd have done it already.
Read that again.
It’s straightforward when you see it spelled out, right? So reverse-engineer the process: begin with small daily actions that align with the person you want to become. Your ideal self will only flourish if you plant the right seeds, and act in tune with the energy of that future self, even if you're not there yet.
Personally, I often think so big that I overlook what I can do now—skipping over immediate progress, missing moments of celebration, and pushing too hard, which often leads to frustration. My urge to rush everything rarely impacts my progress, mental health, or creativity positively; if anything, it holds me back big time.
I don’t have a magic formula. I don’t know you, your goals, or your current mindset. But I can say this: to go big in 10 or 15 years, start by simplifying your actions today. It took me a long time to understand this and start applying it.
The change has to begin in your mind. Your thoughts shape your vibration, and you won’t achieve anything positive if you’re vibrating negatively. The music you listen to, the people you follow on social media, the books and articles you read—these all shape your mental and emotional state. You’re likely familiar with the idea that you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with; their energy influences yours. So why not consider everything around you?
If you’re ready to use ChatGPT as a tool, here’s an experiment: tell it who you want to become. Share your goals, and let it learn your vision. Try using this prompt:
"Based on everything you know about me, my goals, and the person I want to become (if that’s unclear, let me know), create a full report and SWOT analysis. Help me craft a plan to become my best self and achieve my goals. Keep my behavior patterns, challenges, fears, and pain points in mind to develop a thorough action plan and a quadrant chart (using mermaid language for Notion)."
Then, follow up with:
"Export a list of habits and routines that include self-care, study, downtime, and workouts, so I can put this plan in motion."
Once you've done that, you can start chose the habits that are the most critical for you to become who you want to be, and track them. Everyday.
